The first practical steps after naturalization, including your certificate, passport, voter registration, and Social Security update.

Congratulations. Once you complete the Oath of Allegiance, you are officially a U.S. citizen. After the ceremony, there are a few important tasks that can save you stress later.

1. Protect your Certificate of Naturalization

Review it before leaving the ceremony site and make sure your name and details are correct. Then store it somewhere safe. Replacing a lost certificate takes time and money.

2. Apply for your first U.S. passport

Most new citizens apply with Form DS-11 through a passport acceptance facility such as a post office. As of April 2026, a first-time adult passport book generally costs $130 plus a $35 acceptance fee.

Many naturalization ceremonies offer voter-registration help. If not, start with:

4. Update Social Security

It is a good idea to update your citizenship status with the Social Security Administration so your records match your new status.

5. Update records where needed

You may also want to update:

  • Your employer records
  • DMV or state ID records, depending on state rules
  • Any pending immigration sponsorship plans for relatives

6. Celebrate the milestone

Naturalization is a major achievement. Take photos, share the moment, and let yourself enjoy it.
